Safety Precautions
- The Sling Assist is not a lifting device. Do not use with a mechanical or powered lift for lifting a person or body part.
- Do not alter or modify
- Use only as directed
- WARNING: Straps may cause serious injury or death from strangulation. Not for use by children. Don not place around neck. keep out of reach of children when not in use.
- Intended for use only on beds with head of bed adjustability and/or power wheelchairs with tilting function
- Do not use in the case of excessive wear or fabric breakdown
- It is not recommended that a patient lie or sit on the sling assist while not in use.
- Perform thorough skin checks between uses and discontinue use if the Sling Assist causes non blanchable redness or concerning changes.
- Always be aware of pressure and shearing on the user's skin. Not recommended to exceed 10 minutes of dependent support.
Sling placement
- With the patient lying on their back in bed, elevate head of bed and foot of bed to maximum upright position, or as high as the patient can safely tolerate. It may be necessary to place a bolster at the user's feet to prevent sliding. If using an air bed, choose the max inflate setting.
- Slide Sling Assist in place behind the patient so it is centered on their back and the cushioned neck cutout is up. The label and red webbing should be facing out.
- Take the long straps at the right and left hip and feed the metal cam buckle around the rail at the foot of bed, or use heavy duty lashing straps (sold separately by Summit Care Labs).
- Take the long straps at the shoulder and feed through the metal cam buckle. Pull taught gradually. To maintain stability, it will likely be necessary to partially tighten one side, then partially tighten the other before fully tightening both sides.
- Once Sling Assist is secure and there is equal tension on right and left straps, use the head of bed function to decline the head of bed away from the patient. Only 3-4 inches is usually necessary to easily slide a transfer sling behind the patient.
- Continue to place the transfer sling as directed.
- Once transfer sling is in place, elevate head of bed until patient is supported by the bed again and disconnect from foot rails.
- Place straps in patient's lap and perform usual transfer.
- After the transfer, when patient is secured, slide the Sling Assist out from behind them.
- If preferred, reconnect to another solid stationary device similarly and recline the power chair back (PWC must have reclining function, not intended for use with tilt only)
Instructions for Rolling
- With the patient lying on their back, elevate head of bed and slide Sling Assist in place behind the patient so it is centered on their back and the cushioned neck cutout is up. The label and red webbing should be facing out (similar to sling placement setup).
- Return head of bed to flat and use the buckles to secure the side the user is rolling toward on a bed rail or frame.
- Reach across patient and grab the red handle loops to easily pull the patient onto their side.
- It may be necessary to first cross the patient's ankles with the ankle closest to you on the bottom, or lift the patient's far knee upward. This will make a person roll easier.
- Be aware of the edge of the bed. A caregiver should position themselves against the side of the bed and closely monitor so the patient does not roll off the side of the bed. It may be necessary to move the patient away from that side of the bed before rolling
- Feed the long shoulder and hip straps through side bed rails and clip to the red handles to secure the patient on their side for up to 20 minutes to perform bowel/peri care, dressing, etc.
- After side-lying cares are complete, detach buckles from red handles and roll patient back to their back.
Care and Maintenance Instructions
- The Sling Assist is machine-washable on cold setting. Hang to air dry - do not use dryer.
- Before washing, use the buckles to remove metal cam buckles to avoid washer damage.
- Recommended to use the included mesh laundry bag for washing.
- Safe to wipe with hydrogen peroxide or bleach.
